“Snap a selfie, win and be part of the show.” That was the idea behind Venture CO Group’s fan activation at Extreme Barcelona, held from 4–6 September 2026 at the iconic Parc del Fòrum on the Mediterranean coast. As one of the key stops of the Urban World Series, the three-day event brought together action sports enthusiasts, families and young adventure seekers for a weekend built around sport, entertainment and community.
But Extreme Barcelona was more than a sports competition.
With spectacular freestyle BMX, skateboarding and other action sports at its core, the event created a complete experience for its audience. Open-access areas and family-friendly activities kept the venue busy throughout the weekend, attracting an estimated 32,000 visitors over three days — including approximately 13,000 on Saturday alone.
For Venture CO Group, this created an opportunity to answer a simple question:
What if the audience didn’t just watch the show — what if they became part of it?
From spectators to participants
This is where Venture CO Group’s engH fan activation platform came in.
The concept was simple: give fans an easy and engaging way to create their own content and instantly become part of the event. Visitors could take a selfie, add their personal touch and see their photos displayed on the event’s LED screens.
Instead of simply watching the action, fans could suddenly see themselves inside it.
The activation transformed the audience from passive spectators into active participants, creating an immediate connection between the people on the ground, the event itself and the digital experience surrounding it.
And there was an additional reason to take part. Participants who submitted a selfie had the chance to win one of three double VIP tickets to Extreme Barcelona 2027, adding an extra incentive to join.
One activation. Two ways to join.
The platform was designed to make participation as easy as possible. Visitors could access the activation through two main channels: on-site hostesses distributed 1,000 printed cards featuring QR codes, while additional access points were provided through the venue’s LED screens and links shared via the @urbanworldseries Instagram Stories.
This meant fans could discover the activation both physically at the venue and digitally through social media.
After taking their selfie, participants could choose from several creative frames designed specifically for Extreme Barcelona. #EXTREMEBARCELONA, FEEL THE ACTION, TIME TO GET EXTREME and ANEM A L’EXTREME gave participants different ways to connect their personal content with the event’s identity.
The process was intentionally simple.
Scan. Snap. Share. Become part of the show.

The activation generated particularly strong engagement within a short period of time. In just five hours, all 1,000 printed QR-code cards had been distributed, accounting for the large majority of total participation.
The result highlights the importance of reducing friction in fan engagement. The easier it is for people to understand how to participate, the more likely they are to take action.
At Extreme Barcelona, a single QR code turned a physical moment at the event into a digital interaction — and then brought that interaction back into the physical space through the LED screens.
That is the difference between an audience that watches and an audience that participates.
What the numbers show
The pilot produced a clean, measurable funnel from a cold, in-venue audience with no prior awareness of the activation.

- 228 unique fans reached the entry page
- 82 registered participants — a 36% completion rate from entry page to opted-in record
- 100 branded photos produced, returned to fans and played out on screen
- 238 people visible in those photos — an average of 2.4 people per submission
That last number matters more than it looks. Every submission is a small social-proof unit: the activation isn’t one person taking a photo, it’s a group deciding together to be part of the show.
Who was part of the experience?
The audience data revealed another interesting aspect of the activation. While action sports events are often associated with a predominantly young male audience, the Extreme Barcelona activation attracted a more balanced and family-oriented group.

Of the people appearing in submitted photos, 59% were male and 41% were female. The largest age group was 20–29-year-olds, representing 50% of submissions. At the same time, 25% of participants were aged 30–44, many of them parents attending the event with their children. Teenagers accounted for 17%, while children represented 7%.
Perhaps most importantly, approximately one in six submissions featured a family group.

More than a selfie
At Extreme Barcelona, every submitted photo became part of the visual identity of the event. Participants could see themselves on the big screen, share the experience with others and become visible within the community around them.

For sponsors and event partners, this creates a different kind of value. Instead of simply placing a logo in front of an audience, an activation can give that audience a reason to interact, create content and associate the brand experience with a positive personal moment.
The result is not just visibility.
It is participation.
Turning events into experiences
The Extreme Barcelona activation demonstrates how technology can help transform a live sports event into a more interactive and connected experience.
By combining a simple participation mechanic, real-time visual feedback and social media integration, Venture CO Group created a bridge between the physical event and the digital audience surrounding it.
The goal was never simply to collect selfies. It was to create a moment where fans could say:
“I was there. I was part of it.”
And that is where fan engagement becomes more than a feature of an event. It becomes part of the experience itself.

About the project
The Extreme Barcelona 2026 fan activation was carried out within the framework of the i3-INSHAPE project (Project ID 101115108), a European innovation project under the EU’s Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument. i3-INSHAPE builds an innovation ecosystem for healthy, active people in Europe by connecting regional innovation ecosystems across shared smart specialisation priorities.
Venture CO Group participates in the project as a Hungarian flagship company. The Barcelona activation served as a real-world pilot within our interregional co-development work: testing how a fan-engagement mechanic performs with a live action-sports audience, and how the resulting first-party data can be turned into usable market insight for event organisers, rights-holders and creators. The findings feed directly into the next development phase, with further piloting planned during 2026.
